Where’s My Article?!?

In the last issue, we discussed what to do if the wrong article was showing up when you clicked on the "Full Story" link, but what if the article isn't showing up at all? Below is a list of checks that you can go through in order to determine why the article might not be displaying properly.

1.      Edit the article properties.

The first thing to check in the case of a missing article is the article properties.   There are several settings that may prevent an article from displaying. You can edit these for each missing article by either clicking on the green “Articles” button or the red “Layout” button on the Main Menu.  In each case, click on the article in question to edit and check the following settings on the “Edit Article” screen.

  • Check the "Article Position" setting. If the setting is "Determine Position Later,” your article may not be showing up because there is not an area in your layout that is configured for the article. Change this setting to “Show on topic page and in table of contents only” or “Show on Cover Page," depending on where you want the article to be.  You’ll also want to check the “Advance Positioning” setting (click on the button next to the “Article Position” heading).  If the number here is set at 50 or below, your article won’t appear, so make sure it is set at 51 or above.  Note:  If you had intended the article to be part of some special content piece, you may want to review the instructions in the October ‘03 issue to ensure it is set up properly.
  • Check the "Begin Date" of the article. Below “Article Position,” there is an “Article Lifespan” option.  If the “Begin Date” is set to a future date, the article will not display, even in the preview, until that date. There typically isn't any need to set a begin date for an article in the future, as that date doesn't appear in print. If you want to display a date with the article, whether now or in the future, you can set this in the main "Date" field at the top of the “Edit Article” screen.
  • Check the "Status" of the article. At the very bottom of the “Edit Article” page, there is a “Status” option.   Make sure this is set to "Approved.” A “Pending” article will not appear, even in the preview.  (Note:   only people logged in as Publishers can change this setting.)

2.      Edit the layout elements.

If you have checked all of the above settings for the missing article and it is still not showing up, the next step is to review the settings for the Table of Contents.  Click on the red “Layout” button and then the “Article List” and/or “Multiple Article” to get the “Element Properties” page where you’ll find these settings.

  • Check the "Limit Display To" setting.  Under “Order and Filter,” you’ll find this setting, which is designed to keep some regions of the layout from becoming overcrowded with content.  For instance, if the value in the “Limit display to ‘X’ items” field is set to 10, your 11th article will not show up.  Change this setting to a number that is higher than the number of articles that you want to display.
  • Check the "Show only items positioned/rated above" setting.  The next setting in this area refers back to the "Article Position" setting mentioned above. The standard value for this field is 50 for an Article List and 75 for Multiple Articles. If the value for this setting is set to a number above the “Article Position” setting of the article itself, it will not show in this element of the layout.  Reset this number to one that is below the “Article Position” setting.
  • Check the "Limit to This Topic" setting.  Below the “Show only” setting is another option that limits what shows up on your page.   If the “Limit” option is set to show only articles of a certain topic and your missing article is not under that topic, it will not display.  If you want all articles to show up, regardless of topic, set this to "Show All.”

Any one or a combination of these settings could be preventing an article from appearing in your newsletter.  Once you run through this checklist and use the settings recommended above, your article now should appear in your newsletter as expected.   If you’re still having problems, please email us at support@imninc.com.
